FORMER Mayoress of Waverley Peg Denningberg, 87, has died nearly four weeks after she and her husband were hospitalised following a violent incident at their home. Police this week issued a renewed appeal for information concerning a suspected burglary at the house in Ockford Ridge, Godalming, over the weekend of December 2/3. Mrs Denningberg died at the Royal Surrey County Hospital on Thursday last week. A post-mortem examination next day revealed that she died as a result of a heart condition. Her husband Danny Dennigberg, 84, who was Mayor of Waverley in 1992/3, has now left hospital and returned home. He suffered a broken collar bone, a head injury and bruising to his chest, face and shoulder in the incident. When the couple's daughter, Linda Featherstone, discovering her injured parents on the afternoon of Sunday, December 3, Mrs Denningberg was suffering from dehydration, shock and problems arising from her diabetes. Mrs Featherstone called an ambulance, but police were not alerted until Monday, December 4, when she discovered signs of a break in and cash missing. Detective Chief Inspector Gary Summer said: "The death of Mrs Denningberg is very sad news. We are keeping an open mind as to how the victims sustained their injuries and the events leading up to their discovery are still not clear despite extensive enquiries within the local neighbourhood. "We would continue to appeal to anyone with information to come forward and contact police." Mr and Mrs Denningberg were the only Labour members of Waverley Council for many years, serving as mayor and mayoress while holding the balance of power on the "hung" council. They were well known and respected for their support of many charitable organisations, especially those relating to the welfare for the elderly. At a council meeting just before Christmas, current mayor David Inman commended them for their bravery following the incident while Farnham councillor Victor Scrivens commented: "Everybody is frankly outraged by what has taken place." Mr Inman released the following tribute this week: "Mrs Denningberg was a founder member of Waverley Borough Council, being first elected in 1973.   "Both Peg, and her husband Danny, made a significant contribution to the life of the town of Godalming and the Borough of Waverley.   "Mrs Denningberg was a hard-working member of the council and was particularly interested in the council's work around housing, day centres and the voluntary sector. "When Danny Denningberg was Mayor of Waverley during 1992/93, Mrs Denningberg was a loyal and conscientious consort, attending many civic events and supporting her husband. They were very much a partnership. "Mrs Denningberg exemplified selfless service to others and to her community. She never sought the limelight, but her quiet resolve and determination helped her achieve much for the community she loved, and in return, the community held her in high regard."
