A CLAMPDOWN on vandalism in Haslemere has lead to four arrests in the last few days. Officers in Haslemere are tackling people who commit vandalism and daub graffiti in the town. Two boys, aged 13 and 14s, were formally reprimanded on Thursday of last week for set ting off a smoke bomb on the doorstep of a house in April. The youngsters scorched the step and caused great distress to local residents. The boys were identified by the local neighbourhood specialist officer, Ralph Swindell. Two 16-year-old boys from Camelsdale were also arrested and reprimanded last month. One was caught daubing graffiti on lamp- posts near The Herons leisure centre in Kings Road. Police said the incident occurred between October 2005 and January 2006. The second boy daubed graffiti on buildings near to the leisure centre on four occasions between October and December 2005. The offenders were traced following a lengthy investigation into a spate of graffiti within Haslemere by the local policing team. Haslemere sergeant Rob Harris, said: "These arrests demonstrate our commitment to tackling crime and disorder and anti- social behaviour that can adversely affect the lives of Haslemere residents and the environment in which they live and work. "The youths involved undoubtedly thought they had got away with their crimes, but with our persistence they were traced and brought to account for their actions. "On this occasion they received formal reprimands, but it is worth pointing out that criminal damage of this nature carries a maximum sentence of three months' imprisonment and/or a fine not exceeding £2,500." Police are still appealing for witnesses following an incident where a large plank of wood was hurled though a shop window in Wey Hill last month. Damage estimated at more than £1,000 was caused. The incident took place on Sunday, May 21 at around 1 am. Witnessed are urged to contact Dc Jackie Green on 0845 125 2222 quoting crime reference number C/06/10838.
