POLICE are warning people to be vigilant after a couple in Bordon received a scam lottery letter.

On December 1, a couple received a letter claiming to be from Postcode Lotto, which told them they had won £875,000.

When they called a telephone number on the letter, they were told they would have to pay £1,900 in administration fees to release the payment.

Fortunately, the couple recognised that the letter was a scam and didn’t hand over any money.

It is a scam that police believe has been around for many years, with similar letters re-written and sent out to different areas each time. Unfortunately, some people fall victim to it, according to a police spokesman.

Sergeant Ian Dugdale, from Alton police station, said: “The reminder is to never give out your personal information, especially account details, PIN numbers and signatures, to strangers. After all, if you haven’t entered, how can you win? Something that seems too good to be true usually is.”
