POLICE have brought in extra resources in an effort to catch the arsonists believed to be responsible for more than 20 fires in Wey Hill over last 18 months.
Detective constable Richard Pegden, who is investigating the attacks, told The Herald this week that he was asking the public to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.
"Anyone who is in the area at night or in the early hours of the morning, such as postmen and milkmen may also be able to help," said Dc Pegden.
In May, traders in Wey Hill called for urgent police action after six people had to be evacuated from their homes following a suspicious fire at the rear of 74's Cafe. A shed and its contents were destroyed.
Fears that the arson attacks could endanger life were made along with with demands for a greater police presence in the town.
The latest incident occurred at the rear of Ralph Combes, the hardware shop in Wey Hill when fire damaged bags of compost.
Over the past 18 months, tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused and the cafe, a fruit and vegetable wholesalers, Kelway Law Estate Agents, and a nearby garage have all been targeted.
Among other suspicious fires that have taken place over the period was a shed at the Crown and Cushion Public House and a wheelie bin fire close to a toilet block at the top of Wey Hill, which caused £5,000 damage.
