DETECTIVES are appealing for information after a train guard was assaulted.

The incident occurred at around 8.45pm on July 31 on the Waterloo to Alton service when a group of men boarded the train at Brookwood.

Dc Claire Collin said: "During the journey, the train guard asked the group to see their tickets. None of the men had tickets for travel, but one of the group bought tickets for them all.

"As the train approached Ash Vale station, one of the men then became aggressive towards the guard. The man took the victim's glasses off of him and threw them onto the track."

One of the men is described as white, aged 30 to 35, of medium build and 6ft tall.

Police are following lines of enquiry, including CCTV footage but still need to speak to any witnesses.

Matt Winnie, head of security and revenue protection for the South West Trains – Network Rail Alliance said: "This was an unpleasant and intimidating experience for our member of staff, who had simply asked to see their tickets.

"We condemn threats against our staff for doing their job and we are asking anyone with any information that could assist our investigation to come forward."

Dc Collin added: "The guard was simply trying to do his job and staff should be free to carry out their duties without being abused." The officer is urging anyone with information to call British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 405040 or text 61016 quoting B9/LSA of 07/08/2013 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
