SURREY and Sussex Police have denied that plans to collaborate in areas to fight major crime is the first step toward a full-blown merger between the two forces.
Both forces' police authorities agreed last week to collaborate in major crime, scientific support and tactical firearms operations.
But senior officers and councillors who sit on the two governing authorities said it is not a precursor to a merger.
