A 20-year-old Petersfield man received life-threatening injuries when he was stabbed in the stomach two days before Christmas.

The man, who is not being named, was rushed to Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth where he underwent emergency surgery which saved his life.

And now police are appealing for witnesses to help them with their investigation.

After spending a week in hospital the man was allowed home on Monday and is recovering at home.

A spokesman for Alton CID told The Herald the stabbing took place between 5 and 6 pm in Rival Moor Road when the 20-year-old man and a male friend were walking along Rival Moor Road from the town centre.

Walking separately in the same direction were another man and a friend. Police say they do not yet know whether the friend was a man or a woman.

But when the two pairs were between Thorne Close and Bracken Road say police, an incident occurred which left the 5ft 10in-tall 20 year old with a life-threatening stab wound.

The victim and his friend rang for an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. Police do not yet know what weapon was used in the attack on the man.

But Rival Moor Road was cordoned off for several hours on the evening of December 23 as police began their investigation into the incident.

They are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The spokesman said: ÒRival Moor Road is a large residential area used by many people as a through road to get to their homes and we are hopeful that someone may have seen the incident.Ó
