PETERSFIELD police are to patrol the Heath at night over the next few weeks to ensure the safety of young people after an incident late on Saturday night.

Police warned girls leaving Vertigo after a late-night clubbing session not to walk home alone after a report of a serious sexual assault.

Insp Steve Sargent told The Herald this week: "We went to Vertigo to warn people not to leave alone because, at the time, we did not know what was involved and the case is still under investigation.

"But, having made inquiries, we found that this incident was much less serious than we first thought."

However, he said there were many young people on Petersfield's Heath late at night and problems were being reported.

"One of my main aims over the next few weeks is to put extra patrols on the Heath, not to interfere with young people having fun, but to make sure they are doing that safely."
