POLICE are stepping up their campaign to find the Liss arsonist.
Since the end of April eight suspicious fires have been reported and the senior officer at Petersfield police station, Inspector Steve Sargent, is deeply concerned.
"We are sure these fires are being started by young people and we are very worried that, before long, some much more serious damage will be done or someone will be injured or killed."
The fires included two wheely bins, three park benches and wooden fences, and three empty buildings.
Syke House in Station Road was badly damaged on May 22, the garage of St Mary's vicarage in Station Road was destroyed on June 16 and on June 24 a small fire was started inside the disused St Mary's Hall in Station Road.
"We are very keen to discover who is doing this," said Inspector Sargent, "and we are looking to the public of Liss to help us as much as they can.
"Many people must know who is starting these fires and, for the safety of others, they have a responsibility to let us know so that further danger can be prevented.
"We are particularly looking for information from young people who know the offenders and realise how dangerous this sort of thing can be."
Anyone who can help should telephone Petersfield police on 0845 045 45 45, or write to Inspector Sargent at the police station, St Peter's Road, Petersfield.
Anyone who feels they need to give information anonymously can call Crimestoppers, free, on 0800 555111. They will not be asked to give their names, and Crimestoppers will pass on any information to the police confidentially.
"All information will be treated sensitively," said Inspector Sargent, "so we encourage anyone who can help to do so quickly before something really serious happens."
