POLICE community support officers (PCSOs) in Bordon and Headley now have the authority to give out fixed penalty notices to tackle littering and dog fouling. East Hampshire District Council is welcoming the support of Hampshire Constabulary in a bid to cut down the problems. Residents will now be charged £50 for failing to clean up after a dog in public areas and £80 for littering. Whitehill PCSO John Terry offered help in enforcing the law and as a result fourteen Pcs and PCSOs from the Bordon, Headley and Petersfield areas are now authorised by the council to serve fixed penalty notices. Those who fail to pay within 14 days will then risk prosecution by East Hampshire District Council. Judy Onslow, the district council's portfolio holder for the environment, is delighted with the initiative. She said: "This is a great example of efficient partnership working. "The PCSOs are already out and about supporting the community and are able to take on these additional tasks. "Cleaner surroundings also tend to help reduce crime and so there is a double benefit for the majority of residents who value a clean and safe local environment and want to keep it that way".
