A FIRE at a house in Trout Road, Haslemere, on Friday night led to concerns for a woman's safety after it was feared that she was trapped inside.

A man is now helping police with enquiries following the fire, which is believed to have been started in suspicious circumstances.

The alarm was raised at 11-30 pm when a neighbour heard a smoke alarm go off in the house and called the fire brigade.

Three fire crews, two from Haslemere and one from Godalming, plus police, paramedics and a fire investigation officer attended the scene.

Two firemen wearing breathing apparatus went into the house and carried out a full search, but could see no one. The missing woman was later found safe at a neighbour's house.

Once the fire, which was in the hallway, was extinguished, the crew used a new positive pressure ventilation fan to ventilate the house and minimise smoke damage.

Oxygen also had to be given to a member of the public who was suffering from smoke inhalation and shock.

The hallway was burnt and with the rest of the house damaged by smoke.

Police have confirmed that the fire is being treated as suspicious and the cause is now under investigation.
