TWO policemen were seriously injured when their car hit a tree on the A287 while driving towards Tilford to attend a suspected domestic violence incident.

Their names are not being released, but the officer driving from Guildford, 33, married with two children, was in critical condition at the time of going to press.

He was taken to Frimley Park Hospital intensive care unit after the accident at 7-30 pm on Thursday last week. His male colleague, 26, single, also of Guildford, was also admitted to the unit, but was said to be stable.

Their vehicle had been travelling from the direction of Hindhead when it left the road on a bend and hit a tree near Frensham.

The pair had been dealing with the case of a 12 year old girl missing from the Guildford area. After finding and returning the youngster to her family, they received a call to a domestic incident in Tilford.

A spokesperson for the police said they were "very concerned and upset" to learn of the incident.

She said it was one of the worst incidents she had heard of in recent times, and that with any emergency call-outs there were risks of accidents.

The two officers were part of the force's Targeted Patrol Team of more than 100, providing rapid response to emergency calls.

Police are are seeking witnesses. Any information should be given on (01932) 569922 or Farnham police station on (01252) 716262.
