HASLEMERE MP Jeremy Hunt has become the first cabinet minister to hint at the prospect of a snap General Election should MPs seek to stall Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Appearing on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Mr Hunt responded to the High Court ruling that Parliament must vote on when the formal process of leaving the EU can get under way and warned that any attempts to frustrate the prime minister’s Brexit plans could result in an early election.

The Health Secretary who is MP for South West Surrey, said: “A General Election is frankly the last thing that the Government wants. Theresa May wants to get on with the job, and frankly it’s the last thing the British people want, with all these very, very important national decisions.

“And I think, because of that, it is highly unlikely Parliament would not in the end back a decision to trigger Article 50.”

Mr Hunt also added the impact of Brexit on the British economy “would be far worse” if the PM was forced to lay out her entire negotiating strategy prior to entering talks with Brussels.
