BRITAIN’S new prime minister made an impromptu visit to Farnham last Sunday for Dame Elizabeth and Sir Peter Anson’s annual barbecue for members of the South West Surrey Conservative Association.

Theresa May, who became Britain’s second female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher on Wednesday, was the guest of honour at the traditional fundraising event held at Dame Elizabeth and Sir Peter’s home in Rowledge.

She was joined on the day by MP for South West Surrey and cabinet colleague Jeremy Hunt, as well as numerous local Tory councillors and supporters - among them Wyatt Ramsdale, celebrating his recent selection as Tory candidate for the upcoming Surrey County Council election in the Farnham South division.

Mr Hunt said: “We were delighted to welcome our prime minister to Farnham on Sunday. Theresa May went down extremely well with local supporters who were very impressed with her warmth and down to earth manner.

“Appearing at the Anson’s annual barbecue is clearly a vital step for anyone wishing to become prime minister - Farnham today, the world tomorrow!

“On a personal level I am thrilled that she has won the contest to take over from David Cameron. We face extremely challenging times and her resilience, strength and proven track record is our very best chance as a country.”

This year’s barbecue raised more than £2,500 for the South West Surrey Conservative Association and was hailed a great success by organisers.
