THE number of Chichester district councillors could be reduced as part of an electoral review of the district.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has recommended reducing the number of councillors from 48 to 36, as suggested by the council. This would mean each councillor representing an average of 2,744 people, compared with the current figure of 1,930.

People across the district are invited to have their say on how the ward pattern should look. These ideas will form part of proposals the council will put forward to the Boundary Commission, which will make the final decision.

The commission is responsible for deciding the number of councillors, and the names and boundaries of the wards.

Philippa Hardwick, Chichester District Council’s member for governance, said: “This review is an opportunity for people to think about their community and where they think the ward boundaries should be.

“We would very much like to hear from anyone who has any opinions or ideas so that we can consider them when drawing up our proposals.”

You can email member [email protected] or write to Member Services, Chichester District Council, East Pallant House, PO19 1TY.”

Once residents and local interested organisations have submitted their views, the council will draw up its proposal and make it public in mid-February for comment.

Residents can also submit their views to the Boundary Commission in writing to: The Review Officer (Chichester), LGBCE, 14th floor, Millbank Tower, London, SW1P 4QP or by emailing [email protected]

The commission will publish draft recommendations in June online at www. lgbce.org.uk

A public consultation will run until early August and any changes will take effect from November.
