FRENSHAM Great Pond remains closed to bathers more than a month after unsafe levels of blue-green algae were first detected.

The pond was closed on July 19 after Waverley Borough Council, which manages the site, received an algal analysis report from the Environment Agency (EA).

Since then, the EA has tested the water on a weekly basis and so far levels of algae have not yet fallen to an acceptable level.

Waverley is currently awaiting the latest results from the EA, but in the meantime it is still advising people to stay out of the water.

Blue-green algae naturally occurs in estuaries, the sea and in inland waters but can produce toxins strong enough to kill wild animals, domestic pets and farm livestock, and can lead to illnesses and rashes in humans.

Anyone who comes in contact with the water at Frensham Great Pond is advised to wash their hands well before eating, drinking or smoking.

They should also shower as soon as possible after leaving the water and seek medical advice if there are any signs of skin rash, stomach pains or vomiting.
