THE Frame Gallery in Odiham has helped create a lasting memorial commemorating the men from the village of Greywell who lost their lives in the two world wars.

The poignant poppy memorial, now on display in Greywell village hall, is made up of five ceramic poppies taken from last year’s Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Each poppy represents the one of the five men from the village who lost their lives in the Great War, namely Driver Thomas Dawson, Private Walter Dicker, Corporal Charles Holloway, Private Frederick Holloway DCM, and Corporal Albert Pink.

The poppy display was unveiled alongside the Greywell War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. To commemorate the event, the village also hosted several talks by First World War historian and battlefield tour guide Dave Platt, and there was a static display of artefacts from the battlefields at The Somme.

Mike Burnside, who commissioned the display, was thankful to Jan Baker and her team for their assistance. He said: “Thanks to Jan and The Frame Gallery’s expert advice, we were able to complete what was a very unusual, complex order in time for our memorial celebrations.”

The poppies are on permanent display in Greywell village hall.
