VILLAGERS in Upper Farringdon, near Alton, have welcomed the re-opening of their local, The Rose and Crown, after it was closed for a year.
And new manager Andrew Ranson and his partner Caroline Pring bring with them a wealth of experience in the pub trade.
Some had a personal interest in the restoration of the pub as in September a group of residents turned out to help the owners, Debbie and Steve Newton, give the building a “deep clean” after being closed for so long. The garden also got a makeover.
Debbie and Steve, although agreeing they wouldn’t be behind the bar pulling the pints but would appoint a manager, said: “We want it to be a village pub again because we realised what an important part it plays in the community.”
The building, built in 1810 by landowner Robert Knight, Jane Austen’s brother, has had a complete refurbishment but has lost none of its charm, keeping its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, with the added bonus, in the winter months, of a roaring log fire to greet customers.
Several visitors might recognise Caroline and Andrew as they ran The Hawkley Inn and have brought with them the pub’s chefs, brothers Zoltan and Boli Kover, whose signature dishes of roast beef, steaks and lavender crème brulee top the menu.
Andrew grew up in a pub, his parents were landlords at The Market Inn in Petersfield, and his brother, Steven, runs Annie Jones in the town.
The pub opened for drinks only on December 22 and two weeks ago, refurbishments complete, opened for business. Andrew said: “I am glad to say we have been very busy, our Sunday roasts are very popular, and I think the villagers like the fact their pub is now up and running again.
“I’m also proud of the fact we are a free house and can buy our drink and food from any supplier, although where we can we like to buy locally sourced produce.”
As well as an extensive wine list and a range of beers and ales the pub also boasts a small gin bar with 16 distinct brands to choose from which are perfect as an aperitif as you relax by the fire, or in the summer in the pretty garden while you make your choices from the menu.
