A PLAN to open a post office in Churt Village Hall is set to breathe new life into the village. The unique scheme, if it gets the go ahead from Waverley Borough Council, will give permission for the use of the village hall committee room as a post office for three afternoons a week and also provide disabled access to the building. Churt lost its post office last September when its favourite village sub-postmaster retired after 24 years of dedicated service to the village and the shop closed. It was an end of an era for Michael Stenning, whose father ran the post office from 1936 until he gave up his job in London to take over in 1980. Speaking to The Herald this week about the scheme which is believed to be one of the first of its kind in the area, Angela Blagden, village hall management committee member, whose husband Michael is the chairman, hoped the new facility would be up and running as soon as possible. Planned to be manned by part-time sub postmistress of Tilford's Post Office Geraldine Harris, the post office is set to include all the amenities of such a facility. The payment of pensions, a computer link, banking facilities and other facilities are all expected to be included. The idea for the new post office came from the parish council, which approached the village hall management committee. With the nearest post offices several miles away at Beacon Hill and Rushmoor, Mrs Blagden hoped the new post office would be a welcome addition to the village.
