Farnham Road Club had unexpectedly sizzling hot weather for their first open event of the year – a 10-mile time trial on the Farnham-Alton bypass course.

Ten tandems and 118 solos entered on Saturday. Again, the wind helped riders out to the turn, but was surprisingly strong and made the return very difficult. The faster times were mainly recorded by the early starters.

The tandem event was closely-fought, with Ray Hughes and P Young of Clarence Wheelers recording 20mins 12secs to edge out the local pairing of Chris Birch (VC St Raphael) and Robert Allen (Farnham RC) in 20-27. Third were A Cooper and S Brown (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) in 20-37.

Solo favourite Richard Prebble, who lives in Crondall but rides for Team Clean, stormed round in 20mins 01secs, one of the fastest times seen for this course. Graham Stirzaker (Angliasport) was second in 20-58 and Steve Walkling (Portsmouth North End) third in 2l-18.

Ray Hughes followed up his tandem victory by coming equal fourth with M Runnacles (South Bucks RC), both riders recording 20-19.

Local rider Wendy Pails (Farnborough & Camberley) was the fastest lady in 23-56 and the junior prize went to T Parker (North Hants RC) in 25-34.

The team event was won by Charlotteville's Andy Hope (21-41), Hannu Stemp (22-02) and David Butler (23-53), for a combined total of 1-07-36.

Fastest of the 10 Farnham riders was Rob Pennell who finished in 24-13. Andy Dibnah recorded 25-02, Rob Clark 25-21, Ian Windall 25-21 David Campbell 27-11, Nigel Bicknell 27-16, Stephen Langhurst 27-22, Michael Rice 27-33, Heather Dibnah 29-18 and Deana Dibnah 31-05.

The organiser was Jim Brown and timekeepers were Kathy Collard-Berry (Rother Valley) and Dave Wright (Farnham).

l On Sunday, six Farnham RC riders competed in the Charlotteville CC/Border CA 50-mile time trial on a previously unused course on the A31. Conditions were cooler and the wind less strong. The event was won by Nick Green (Pete Read Racing) in a very rapid 1-49-36.

Four of the Farnham contingent were riding the distance competitively for the first time, making Rob Pennell's 2-02-29 a remarkable achievement. Andy Dibnah clocked a creditable 2-11-30, Rob Clark 2-12-47 and Michael Rice 2-18-41. Jim Parker set a personal best 2-14-46 and Nigel Bicknell also beat his PB with 2-29-17.

l Simon Brooks (VC St Raphael) won Farnham's latest weekly '10' in 21mins 22secs. Charlotteville pair Steve Leonard and Derek Dowden recorded 22-26 and 23-14 for second and third.
