AUTHORS, academics, actors, entertainers and Sherlock Holmes societies around the world joined forces to write an open letter to a national newspaper calling on new Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt to block "insensitive" plans to break Undershaw up into several private homes.

The letter, which was published in The Times on Saturday, was countersigned by 53 signatories, including Sir Christopher Frayling, the former chairman of Arts Council England, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth, Uri Geller, and descendants of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
