RESIDENTS in Petersfield's Princes Road claim the building of McDonalds and the BP Garage has turned their lives into a nightmare.

They claim their street has become a "town centre rat run" with 10 times more traffic speeding and creating unbearable noise.

And this week Martin Keywood has written to Petersfield Police, Petersfield Town Council, East Hampshire District Council and Hampshire County Council calling for traffic calming measures before a child is injured in an accident.

Mr Keywood told police and councillors that since the building of the fast-food restaurant and garage two years ago: "Princes Road has become a town centre rat run and no consideration is given to what impact this has on local people."

"The volume of traffic has increased 10 fold and the speed at which some of it travels is totally unacceptable," he claimed.

"This is not only very dangerous and an accident waiting to happen, but the noise it makes as they rev through their gears is becoming absolutely unbearable, especially in the early morning and evening."

Mr Keywood said he believed the road was in desperate need of some sort of traffic calming to slow the route down and reduce and deter the volume of traffic.

Calming measures were especially important, he claimed: "Since I have been informed that East Hampshire District Council are favouring Princes Road for an On Road Safety route."

Mr Keywood said several of his neighbours had already expressed their concerns to the local councils and warned: "I feel it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs and I would reiterate my concern for the safety of the children."

On Tuesday night members of Petersfield Town Council received Mr Keywood's letter and expressed the hope that county councillor John West would take the matter up with the Hampshire County Council highways department.
