SOUTH Farnham Residents' Association's campaign for changes to on-street parking arrangements south of Farnham Station has finally seen some progress. A review of some of the 'hot spots' where traffic problems result from all-day parking of commuters' cars, has been started by Surrey County Council, it was reported at a meeting of the residents' association. County councillor for South Farnham Pat Frost reported that the Farnham Traffic Task Group (of which she is chairman) decided in April which projects in the Farnham area they would be recommending to Surrey for completion in the year 2008/9. Top of the list was the traffic review of Farnham, with a crossing at The Fox pub and safe routes to school across Castle Street coming a close second. These proposals were passed by Surrey's Local Committee and the budget was agreed. Mrs Frost said she had made it clear that she was not interested in a full Farnham review for parking, but one that covered the 'hot spots', namely St George's Road, Thorold Road and Waverley Lane, and this had been agreed. Surrey's traffic engineers will be checking the nature of each of the roads and will assess each on grounds of safety, among other criteria. The next step would then be the publication of an official order, and residents would be informed where to view the plans. Twenty-eight days are allowed for submission of comments by the public. Mrs Frost stressed that it will be extremely important for everyone to express their views, whether it be objection, suggestions for improvement and especially approval. Once objections are overcome, the plan would be put before the Farnham Traffic Task Group for approval and then before the Local Committee for final endorsement. This process would take six to eight months. Mrs Frost also stressed that the station car park enlargement scheme was "still very much on the cards", though progress would depend on the co- ordinated efforts from councillors and the residents' association to put pressure on the rail authority.
