The amount of hard work put in over the winter should give Alton Cricket Club a running start for the new season.

The committee is attempting to improve the club both on and off the field. Several initiatives have been undertaken and it's all systems go for the summer.

One major improvement this year will be the purchase of covers for the main pitch at the Jubilee ground. First team skipper Julian Ballinger said: "Covers should certainly improve playing conditions and I am certain this will help our batsmen to perform far better than they did last term."

The clubhouse has been made more comfortable and highlights of a busy social calendar include a race night on May 4, a golf day on June 14 and the six-a-side on July 7.

Romida Sports have become the club's kit sponsor, but Alton are still seeking a main sponsorship partner with which to work closely in the local community.

On the field, Alton's first team will be pushing for promotion to the Southern Premier League Division Two in Ballinger's second season in charge.

He said: "We will be aiming to build on last season's strong start. The focus will be on consistency, rather than one or two excellent performances."

The squad looks to have more strength in depth this year, with negotiations ongoing for an overseas player and the return of all-rounder Matthew Ireson after a season off. Alton certainly hope to improve on last season's ninth position.

The second team will also be looking to gain the promotion that has eluded them for a number of seasons. After consistent top-six finishes in County Division Three, they are planning a charge to the top this campaign.

The third team, who suffered a heartbreaking relegation from East Division Two, will be looking to bounce straight back. Despite winning seven games last year, they were relegated by a single point in the last week of the season.

The fourth team will continue to act as a breeding ground for Alton's young hopefuls in the Combination East Division.

The Colts' section continues to run sides from U/11s to U/17s. Alton's youngsters have a history of success and there are signs that this is set to continue, with all age groups having plenty of talent.

Alton are fortunate in having several qualified coaches. After an intensive winter course, the club now boasts nine level 1 ECB qualified coaches and three level 2 coaches to help people improve their cricket.

Senior nets are running at Lord Wansdworth College on Mondays from 8 until 10pm. The U/15s and 17s train alongside the seniors. The U/11s and 13s train at Amery Hill School, also on Mondays, from 6-30 and 7-30 respectively.

On Saturday, May 4 there will be an inter-club match for all current and potential members to pit themselves against their team-mates. This will be a great opportunity for people to showcase their skills and put themselves in the frame for selection – as well as settle a few scores!
