CALLAGHANS Solicitors have voiced concern over what they say is a potentially misleading image of divorce created by recent landmark cases in the national press. The firm, with offices at Firgrove Hill, is warning residents of the difficulties that face couples going through divorce proceedings in the Farnham area, due to high property prices. It comes after two wives, Melissa Miller and Julia McFarlane, were awarded payments of £5 million and £250,000 per year for life respectively by the House of Lords, and follows speculation over the divorce settlement that will be awarded to Heather Mills McCartney in her separation from former Beatle, Sir Paul. Richard Mcilwraith, a family lawyer with Callaghans, said: "Although we live in a prosperous area, most people in Farnham will never receive a capital settlement of £5 million or maintenance for life of £250,000 per annum. "Farnham has some of the highest property prices in the UK and one of the main problems our clients face on divorce is trying to buy properties for both the husband and wife to live in. "This may mean that people have to leave the Farnham area and move to another location with cheaper housing and that often means changing the children's schools and starting a new social life." He added: "The headline stories in the national press do not reflect the heartache and misery that everyone goes through following the breakdown of a marriage."
