WAVERLEY Borough Council has told the government that the additional £92,000 received as part of its grant settlement, is "not enough".

Waverley received news from the government last week, that it would be in line for an additional £92,000 as part of its grant settlement for 2004/05.

Although the government had originally promised Waverley a 3.2 per cent increase in grant funding for this period, it only gave 0.3 per cent. In response to this unsatisfactory settlement, Waverley complained to the government, explaining that this was not anywhere near what it had originally been promised.

Although it appears that the government has taken on board some of Waverley's concerns and has allocated the extra funding as a result of pressure from the council, the total amount only equates to an overall increase of 2.3 per cent on last year, below the level of 3.2 per cent promised.

Waverley said that this level of 2.3 per cent is below the level of inflation and still fails to pay for the additional service demands such as recycling and licensing, that the government has placed on the council.
