SAVED from being another ailing British pub statistic that calls time on its customers, The Royal Exchange in Lindford has reopened after an £850,000 refurbishment.

The opening of The Royal Exchange received a big thumbs up from locals who formed the Pub Task Force with the aim of saving the establishment from feared closure.

In 2011 the residents’ group approached Farnham-based Red Mist Leisure after the pub had fallen into a state of disrepair following years of neglect and a lack of investment. Fast forward four years and new-look establishment is up and running with 20 new jobs for local people created.

“We’re delighted to be open finally and look forward to welcoming our customers, both old and new,” said Royal Exchange manager Donna Richards.

“This is the start of a new era for The Royal Exchange and we hope the locals of Lindford and the surrounding areas, who wanted to save their pub, are proud of what we have all achieved together.”

Red Mist Leisure, an independent pub group, also operates The Wheatsheaf in Farnham, The Exchequer in Church Crookham, and The Duke of Cambridge in Tilford.

But the £850,000 spent on the Royal Exchange, which reopened on November 12, is the company’s biggest investment to date.

Hampshire county councillor for Lindford Adam Carew said the regeneration of the village’s pub was “breathtaking”. “I can hardly believe it’s the same place,” he added. “The new owner, Red Mist, has transformed it from a rundown, poorly used local into a bright, vibrant and inviting destination, with exciting menus, a selection of local real ales and a varied wine cellar.

“The place was heaving and word about the quality of dining experience has got around so quickly that there has been a waiting list to book tables.

“I was delighted to meet the new owners who clearly know their trade inside out and have ventured over the border from Surrey to expand their enterprise.

“I was interested to learn that one major commercial consideration in taking over the pub was the proposed regeneration of Whitehill and Bordon next door and I would urge residents to go and see this wonderful new venue. Red Mist has breathed life back into The Royal Exchange and Lindford village, I wish them every success.”
