OBJECTORS to Waverley's "premature" decision to press ahead with a pay-and-display scheme for Wey Hill's Fairground car park have scored a significant victory.

The Haslemere Society joined traders in condemning the recommendation voted through by Waverley's executive committee, in July, to authorise the preparation and submission of a fresh application for commonland consent to refurbish the free fairground car park and charge for the 130 spaces to be provided.

Responding to local concern, members of Waverley's overview and scrutiny committee called in the decision and determined last month that the borough council executive should reconsider it.

Their wish was granted at Tuesday's executive meeting, when members approved the overview and scutiny committee's recommendation that a "full and in-depth consultation with traders, residents and the town council" lasting six weeks would be carried out before the application was progressed.
