Residents will get the chance to learn more about plans to restore Willmer House, the historic home of the Museum of Farnham, at a special event next month.

Waverley Borough Council and The Farnham Society will host a panel discussion at the Great Hall at Farnham Maltings from 7.30pm to 9pm on Monday, September 14.

The event will explore the history of Willmer House and the work being carried out to conserve the Grade I-listed Georgian building.

It forms part of the "Every Brick Counts" campaign, which is raising support for the restoration of the historic property.

The panel will include representatives from Arts Council England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, conservation consultant Graham Abrey, historic brick conservator Emma Simpson MBE and local historian and author Roy Waight.

Cllr Kika Mirylees, Waverley Borough Council portfolio holder for community services, leisure and EDI, said: "Willmer House is a building of enormous historical and cultural significance to Farnham.

"The event offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from experts involved in heritage conservation and to learn more about the exciting restoration plans for this much-loved landmark."

Simon Bradbury, vice-chairman of The Farnham Society, said the organisation had been campaigning to preserve the town’s heritage since 1911.

Willmer House, as a Georgian town house, is an important part of that heritage, he said.

"Coming out of the wealth generated from the hop trade, Willmer House is a Grade I listed building, noted in particular for its brickwork, rated as one of the finest examples of Georgian brickwork in the country,” said Mr Bradbury.

"We are delighted to see how the restoration of this historic asset is progressing. We welcome the opportunity to support this event, presented by the council and their conservation team."
