TWO apple trees, two pear trees and a plum have been planted with due ceremony by children, staff and parents at the front of the school field at All Saints Infant School, Tilford.
The project has been accomplished as part of Fruitshare, a campaign backed by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, which aims to get as many schools as possible planting fruit trees in their grounds.
The TV personality and campaigner explained: "I find the idea that the next generation could be growing more fruit, eating more fruit and cooking their fruit in a much more creative way incredibly exciting."
The trees for All Saints School were provided through 'crowdfunding', a process by which the school asks the parents, teachers, communities and local businesses to help them raise the money to get their trees.
Headteacher Julie Campbell said that the £70 needed to purchase their five trees was pledged overnight. In fact there was a surplus raised, which will be ploughed into the children's other gardening activities.
