POTTERS Gate pupils celebrated Chinese New Year in style on Monday with a visit to the Kar Ling Kwong restaurant to sample some traditional cuisine and learn some Chinese phrases.

The year four children made the trip as part of this year's curriculum focusing on Asia, which over the last three weeks has seen pupils concentrating in many subjects areas on China.

To help bring in the new Chinese Year of the Ox, on January 26, the children dressed up and spent the day playing games, making dragons and discovering which year they were born (rabbit for those born in 1999 and dragon for those born in 2000) and what that symbolises.

The day culminated with a visit to the Kar Ling Kwong restaurant in East Street to try eating with chopsticks and sample a selection of Chinese delicacies, including prawn toast, spring rolls, prawn crackers and chicken wings.

During the visit the children were taught how to say some Chinese phrases, including the traditional Cantonese New Year's greeting 'Gung Hay Fat Choy'.

Kar Ling Kwong owner, Henry Liu, also gave the children fortune cookies, chopsticks and decorations for their classroom.

Year four teacher Gemma Phillips, said: "Henry was extremely generous to allow us to come to his restaurant. The children had a fantastic time and it gave them a real insight into Chinese culture."
