YEAR seven and year eight students from Alton Convent School and Amery Hill revelled in the high-impact interactive roadshow delivered by BAE Systems in partnership with the RAF and the Royal Navy.
The visually enticing session demonstrated key scientific principles while showcasing the possibilities opened by the pursuit of science and maths.
The students were amazed by the display of sound waves demonstrated by voice recordings and alarm clocks in vacuums. They were fascinated to hear how some aircraft can fly faster than the speed of sound and in doing so create a sonic boom.
Light was then investigated and the audience saw the transverse nature of light waves as they moved along fibre optic cables, as different colours.
The effects of reflection, refraction and diffusion were also studied with smoke and mirrors.
It was a fun and engaging educational session, which generated further interest and excitement about the possibilities in the world of science and engineering.
