A MAN who stole a quad bike from a pub landlord in Heath End has escaped an immediate jail sentence after a judge told him to “settle down”.

Freddie Jones, 26, of Derwent Avenue, Ash, took the quad bike from outside The Royal Arms pub in Farnborough Road on Christmas Eve, 2013, and was arrested on Boxing Day, 2013.

Appearing at Guildford Crown Court on October 7, Judge Christopher Critchlow sentenced Jones to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work, pay £1,200 compensation to The Royal Arms’ landlord John-Paul Stubbings and an £80 victim surcharge.

Judge Critchlow said: “You are 26 years old. Sometimes people of this age settle down and stop offending, and lead an honest life.

“You have been given a chance. Make sure you don’t come back here.”
