MINERAL extraction from the Alton Road quarry in Wrecclesham is set to resume after a decade-long hiatus, despite warnings from residents that it could irreparably damage 500 years of natural heritage. An application by Earthline Ltd to extract 770,000 tonnes of soft sand and 512,000 cubic metres of clay from the 100-acre site was granted permission by Surrey County Council's planning and regulatory committee last week. Earthline, which took on a lease for the quarry to the rear of the Westfield Lane sports ground in 2012, has also been granted consent to infill the site with 2.6 million cubic metres of non-hazardous inert waste.
