A MAN who escorted the Queen at Leeds United’s football stadium celebrated his 100th birthday at The Lawn care home in Alton.

Donald Swann looked after her at a 1977 event celebrating the achievements of Yorkshire youth groups.

On June 11 that year she made him an OBE in her Silver Jubilee and Birthday Honours List for youth and community services work in Huddersfield and Bradford.

In 1961 he became Bradford Council’s first principal youth and community officer, and he worked on The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

He said: “By taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award the young people I worked with learnt essential skills such as problem solving and teamwork, alongside becoming resilient and good communicators – all things that help in life.

“It was a wonderful thing to be involved with, it really did help transform lives.”
