AN impressive £2,000 was raised for Haslemere’s Hunter Centre by members of the town’s quilting group.

Haslemere Quilters chose the day care facility at Marjorie Gray Hall, which supports those with dementia and their carers, as its charity for 2018.

Quilter Liz Cook proposed the centre and it won following a vote by members at last year’s annual general meeting. Liz then led the fundraising team who succeeded in swelling the total to £2,000.

The centre is named after Dr Anne Hunter OBE, the pioneering Haslemere neurologist who helped found the Alzheimer’s Society in 1979, and she was guest of honour at the cheque presentation.

Haslemere Quilters was started in 2012 and meets monthly at Our Lady of Lourdes church hall. The group holds lectures and workshops as well as sewing days.

Quilter Sue Parker said: “This was a great effort with lots of hard work by all the members for a very worthwhile cause.

“The money was raised in three different ways – from our monthly raffle, from a grand raffle with excellent prizes, and from our stall at the Christmas Bliss Fair, where we sold items made by members of our group at sewing days organised by the fundraising team.”
