FARNHAM’S Rachel Morris has expressed her pride at being named as part of Team GB’s nine person-strong rowing squad at this summer’s Rio Paralympics.

Rachel, whose selection was confirmed at the Henley Royal Regatta on Thursday, will be competing in her second Paralympic sport in Rio, the women’s single scull (ASW1x), having won medals for GB in hand cycling at the previous two Paralympic Games.

Already a silver medallist in her new sport at the 2015 World Championships, the 37 year old will be seeking to add her to Paralympic medal tally - gold in Beijing and bronze in London - when she competes in Brazil this summer.

It comes after Rachel won a World Cup gold in Poznan earlier in June, beating the reigning World Champion Brigit Skarstein and setting a new world best time - as reported in the Herald (http://tinyurl.com/jaw7dek).

Rachel said on her selection for Rio: “I’m so proud to be wearing Paralympics GB kit again, to be representing my country is such a privilege.

“I’m so happy to have had such an incredible few years changing from a cyclist to a rower and had the chance and people believing in me.

“I would like to thank the GB Rowing Team support staff and Tom Dyson for coaching me and helping me achieve new goals and getting me into the position I am now, both mentally and physically.

“My family have been such a support by providing understanding and calmness as I’m challenged further and further to set new levels.”

She joins an experienced GB rowing squad for the Rio Paralympics including Tom Aggar who won single sculls gold in Beijing and Pam Relph who was part of the victorious mixed coxed four in London.

The rowing events at this year’s Rio Paralympics will take place over three days between Friday, September 9, and Sunday, September 11, broadcast live on Channel 4 and online.
