SURREY Police and Crime Commissioner Kevin Hurley has called for a "radical" 24 per cent increase to the force's share of taxpayer funds.

In a letter to The Herald, Mr Hurley detailed the damage continued cuts are causing Surrey Police and called for a referendum to be held so Surrey residents could vote if they agreed to a 24 per cent increase in the police share of the council tax precept.

For an average Band D household, the police's precept hike would represent an increase of just under £1 per week and £51 per year.

"I believe we have reached a point where further cuts to Surrey Police would significantly undermine its ability to protect residents," he stated.
