BY the time the 340 houses and additional commercial development proposed for Alton in East Hampshire's draft district local plan have been absorbed, the town's infrastructure will be bursting at the seams, town councillors have warned.

"The infrastructure was designed for a place less than half the size of Alton today, it's beginning to creak," council leader Peter Whitmarsh said as he and his colleagues fine-tuned the comments they have put to EHDC. "After 2011 a radical solution will have to be considered."
