RAMBLERS have thrown a ‘birthday party’ to mark the fifth anniversary of a riverside path closure in Elstead.

A 50-metre stretch of Footpath 64 has been closed since December 2014 over fears it could be eroded by the River Wey, forcing walkers on a lengthy diversion.

Surrey and Beyond Ramblers spokesman Mark Percy said: “This is a very attractive riverside path and it’s unacceptable that it’s been ‘temporarily’ closed for five years. We call on Surrey County Council and the landowner to agree a minor diversion back from the edge of the riverbank without delay.”

Elstead Parish Council chairman Pat Murphy added: “The path is a valuable amenity for local people and visitors. We, too, are very frustrated over the delay. We have to bring this to a conclusion.”
