WEST Sussex County Council has now agreed to make changes to its waste and recycling centres in a bid to save around £2million a year.

From October 2017, opening hours at all sites will be 10am-7pm five days a week in summer and 10am-5pm in winter. Midhurst will be open on Sundays.

There will be charges for non-household waste disposal including soil, hardcore, DIY, plasterboard, car and van tyres. Commercial type tyres such as LGV, tractor and mobile plant tyres will not be accepted.

Most of the mobile recycling services in Chichester District will close, but two extra officers will be employed to combat fly-tipping. The county council took into consideration the views of more than 4,800 residents – the biggest response to a consultation West Sussex has ever run.

• Gardeners can now benefit from an improved garden recycling service, now that it has been extended to cover the majority of properties in parts of West Sussex.

Chichester District Council is offering residents the service free for three months free when they sign up online with a promotional code. The fortnightly collection service costs less than £1 a week, including the delivery of a green bin.

Roger Barrow, CDC’s councillor for the environment, said: “As well as saving you a job transporting your garden waste to the tip, your garden waste is recycled to provide compost for local farms, making it a very environmentally friendly way of keeping your garden clear.”

Councils have to recycle half of all waste by 2020.

The garden waste is delivered to the Woodhorn Group’s 1,500-acre organic arable and dairy farm based in Oving, where it is converted into compost over a 14-week period.
