FOSTERS Bridge in Haslemere was reopened on Friday ending four weeks of diversions for drivers.

But the coats of arms that have been attached on either side of the bridge as part of the renovations were criticised by councillors at last Thursday's meeting as being "ugly and ridiculous".

Referring to the Haslemere town emblem on the side of the bridge facing Wey Hill, Jackie Keen said: "It's quite ugly where it's been stuck. I think they could have done a lot better if they had placed it lower down, and used an oval design."

On the side of the bridge facing the station, the Haslemere Society coat of arms has been put in place.

Mayor Michael Barnes said that he had received a number of adverse comments about the badges from people in the town.

The bridge had been closed not only to hang the coats of arms but also to install netting that would prevent pigeons from settling underneath and creating mess. The work was carried out by Railtrack and Surrey County Council.

Peter Rolph is the landlord of the Crown and Cushion pub in Weydown Road, who said that his business had been affected by the bridge closure and welcomed the reopening.

Mr Rolph told The Herald: "Many of my regulars are from the other side of the bridge."

However, he did say that the repairs to the bridge were necessary, but worried that the departing pigeons might decide to settle on his pub.

By way of celebration, Mr Rolph carried out his own unofficial ceremony to reopen the bridge last Thursday by cutting a ribbon and opening some Champagne.
