REVOLUTIONARY new signs next to a Haslemere bridge should cut the risk of road accidents and bring an end to unpopular bus route diversions.
The signs were recently installed at Fosters Bridge after lengthy discussions between Surrey County Council and public transport operator, Stagecoach.
Along with improved road markings at the bridge, the responsive signs will increase road safety by lighting up to warn oncoming traffic when a large vehicle is about to pass under the bridge.
Passengers on the top deck of a Stagecoach bus were lucky to escape injury in July when the bus roof was ripped off in a collision with the bridge.
Following this accident, Stagecoach rerouted its double-decker buses and withdrew a much- needed school service because of safety concerns.
There was further controversy when local residents and the headteacher of St Bartholomew's School, Christine McCracken, objected to the diversions.
Mrs McCracken was horrified that the bus company had planned to reroute the buses along roads near the school.
This week, county councillor for Haslemere, Christine Stevens, who has campaigned for the signs, was pleased at their arrival.
"This is an excellent achievement as residents can now continue to use their much-needed bus route and children are able to arrive at school safely and on time," said Mrs Stevens.
