ALL-day users of Alton's outer car parks may not after all have to face such a steep rise in charges as was at first proposed. The recommendation suggested a massive hike in the charge, from £1.40 to £4.

When it emerged, at a meeting of EHDC's environment services committee that the town had not been represented on the working party which recommended the charges, local councillors appealed for the town to be treated as a special case, as shop and office workers have no alternative to these car parks.
