TWO by-elections have been called after the resignation of two town councillors.

The two casual vacancies opened up after councillors Rigby Andrews and David Cooper resigned.

Outgoing mayor Mr Cooper (Cons, Whitehill Hogmoor) stood down in May due to a hip operation and feeling he was “a bit long in the tooth”.

Mr Andrews, Whitehill Town Council’s only UKIP member (Whitehill Deadwater) stood down shortly after citing “a lot of internal strife” and the politicisation of a public body he “regarded as non political” as his reasons.

If 10 or more residents request an election one is called. If not, the council is permitted to fill the vacancies as it chooses, normally through co-option. Town clerk Andrea Mann confirmed residents had demanded two by-elections.

A district council spokesman said the vote must be held within 60 working days of being called.
