Bedales School in Steep has announced its spring and summer programme of events.

Patrick Derham and Bedales bursary students will hold a question and answer session called The Power Of Bursaries tomorrow (Friday) from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Patrick’s life was transformed by a bursary as a child and he has worked passionately to widen access to university education and to independent schools.

He served as headmaster of Westminster School from 2014 to 2020, and previously as headmaster of Rugby School where he developed the Arnold Foundation Bursary Programme.

Patrick was instrumental in setting up the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, the UK’s largest school bursary charity, which identifies children most likely to benefit from a bursary place at schools including Bedales.

Free tickets are also available for the Spring Scholars’ Concert, which takes place on Wednesday from 7pm to 8.30pm.

A Bedales spokesperson said: “Our music scholars will present a rich and varied programme of solo items to showcase their skill and hard work. You can expect an exciting blend of music from the 18th century through to interpretations of jazz standards from the 1950s.

“Individual endeavour is a keystone of the Bedales ethos and this is demonstrated most convincingly by our young musicians and the work they do to hone their skills.”

Beautiful Evil Things, on January 19 from 7.30pm to 9pm, is a fierce, funny, bloody take on some of the oldest stories known to woman. From a killer gorgon.

What if there was another take on the Trojan War? Enter Medusa. She was there – as a bodiless head strapped to the shield of a goddess.

Her forever open eyes saw it all: Epic combat. Mighty swords. Giant horse sculptures filled with men. But as the war raged on, Medusa’s petrifying gaze focused on three extraordinary women who might just hold the key to her ultimate hope.
