Sir, – Last week's Farnham Herald caused me some dismay by reporting on the proposals for mineral extraction on three separate sties in and around Farnham.

Local residents, the parish, town and borough councils, The Farnham Society and other organisations make great efforts to protect this lovely Georgian town and its pretty villages. What a travesty that despite all our efforts the area is slowly becoming an island surrounded by rubbish dumps and toxic waste sites.

It is a cruel irony that family homes are refused planning permission for modest extension in an attempt to preserve the area's character while the mineral and waste companies seem to have "carte blanche" to wreak havoc throughout the locality.

The latest proposal to use the already congested roads to import yet more poisonous wastes to be dumped at Alton Road and Grooms Farm is yet another deliberate act of commercial vandalism.

We, the people of Farnham and the villages, must make our absolute objections to these plans known to both Hampshire and Surrey County Councils if we are to avoid becoming the waste pit for the south east. "Farnham on Tip" is not the most attractive prospect!
