THAMES Water has accepted responsibility for a mysterious polystyrene boom that appeared in the River Wey in Farnham late last month.

After Farnham Town Council and the Environment Agency denied any knowledge of the boom’s origins, located next to the bridge in Gostrey Meadow, a Thames Water spokesman told the Herald: “The protective boom was put in place as a precautionary measure to stop waste from a misconnected sewer pipe at a nearby property entering the watercourse.

“Our preventative action meant there was no impact on the river, but the boom will remain in place while we support the property owner to rectify the problem with their pipe.”
