HASLEMERE Road in Liphook was forced to close on Saturday morning due to flooding which turned to ice.

Hampshire County Council’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, Sean Woodward, said: “Our highways team was alerted by the police on Saturday morning because a road in Liphook had become flooded and icy.

“The area in question falls under the responsibility of West Sussex County Council, so the police also contacted West Sussex.

“Our engineers responded by visiting the location and taking what steps they could to alleviate the flooding, by digging a channel in the verge that allowed the water to flow off the road and into an existing ditch below the road level.

“They also made arrangements to divert the traffic until West Sussex engineers arrived to take charge.

“We intend to work with our partners at West Sussex to look at longer-term solutions to this issue.”

lTHE Hindhead Tunnel was closed for around 20 minutes on Sunday evening after a driver was spotted driving the wrong way along the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway of the A3, near the Milford slip way.

Police said the tunnel was closed northbound for safety reasons, in the case the car was to go through the tunnel in the wrong direction, and a rolling road closure from the tunnel going up towards Guildford was put in place.

After confirming the road was clear it was reopened to traffic and the tunnel was reopened at around 7.20pm.

The tunnel was also fully closed overnight, on Tuesday, for a structural inspection of the Miss James footbridge at Hindhead. The southbound bore was also closed for maintenance on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, with a contraflow through the northbound bore.
