CONTRACTORS responsible for the upkeep and improvement of 3,000 miles of roads across Surrey are set to be dropped, after the county council's cabinet decided to retender the £20m-a-year contract, seeking a more competitive deal.

Ringway, the contractor responsible for repairs in the Waverley area, and Carillon, working in the east of the county, have held the contract for six years.
